Corridor #8

Directed by

Behind the designation Corridor #8 looms a European Union project to build a highway from the Black Sea to the Adriatic, linking Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania. In the past 10 years, the ambitious roadbuilders have completed just 35 km of the route. In this travelogue recounting Despodov's comic and touching encounters along a road to nowhere lengthened by tortuous detours (324 km), he meets some truly incredible people as he crosses an area caught between past and future, but fascinating in its oddities, contradictions and endless problems.

Director's Notes

«In the Balkans, you learn from an early age that you live at a crossroads, only to discover later that the road leads nowhere. The people who inhabit this backward corner of Europe are similar in mentality and way of life, but they are isolated and full of prejudices towards one another. I wanted to make a film that told the story of these heroes and their strong individualism (...) I tried to bring together a group of characters who represented their sad and funny sides, to highlight the absurdity of isolation, but also that of the invasion of "wild" capitalism».
