I Am the River, the River is Me

Directed by
The river Whanganui is sacred for the Māori because it is alive, indivisible, and tied to their ancestors. In 2017 this belief became law in New Zealand. The river was granted legal identity in recognition of an ancient culture and concepts held by all Māori, and constituted an act of environmental protection. This is the spirit with which Ned Tapa, a river warden, guides a group of friends, family members, a camera crew, environmental activists, and Jimmy the dog on a 5-day canoe trip. The aim is to reflect on our relationship with our surroundings, especially nature, and think about the principles of environmental stewardship.
