After the summer season has ended and the last tourist has left Salina, an island of the Aeolian archipelago off the north-east coast of Sicily, the islanders, about 1000, return to their routines regulated by the rhythms of the sea and timed to a slower pace. In the shadow of two silent volcanoes and at the crossroads of various different cultures which have left behind their ruins and customs, the community goes about its daily business of events big and small, expected and unexpected: fishermen crossing paths in the sea; the outbreak of a fire; the first birth of the year—the normality of off season.
