Nera - Not the Promised Land

Directed by

The sad story of a Nigerian woman lured to Italy with promises of a better life but subjected to violence, crime and poverty when forced to earn her livelihood by selling her body on streets out somewhere in the provinces. Her marriage to an elderly man seems to save her from subjection and misery: a new life awaits her with a poorly paid factory job. A sequel to Nera, Welcome to my World (2007), this personal portrait painted in delicate strokes reveals a hidden world where immigration and marginalization go side by side.

Director's Notes

«For Nigerian girls, beyond the streets, Italy is a country full of challenges. Starting with linguistic ones, and continuing with those related to behavior, speech, and lifestyle. These are two populations that are culturally distant, and who do very little to get to know each other. This is where the difficulties arise».
