Esordisce nella regia negli anni '90. Nel 2001 il suo War Photographer viene nominato all’Oscar e nel 2009 Space Tourists vince il World Cinema Directing Award al Sundance Film Festival. Genesis 2.0 (2018), co-diretto con Maxim Arbugaev, vince la 21ma edizione di CinemAmbiente. In veste di produttore realizza Raving Iran (2016), Saudi Runaway (2020) e Girl Gang (2022), di Susanne Regina Meures. Già presidente della Commissione per il documentario dell’Ufficio federale della cultura svizzero, dal 2006 al 2023 è docente associato di Reflection Competence presso l’Università di San Gallo.
