Ha esordito con Memory and Desire selezionato alla Settimana della Critica del Festival di Cannes nel 1998. I cortometraggi Footage e Sur to Rise sono stati selezionati rispettivamente al Festival di Venezia del 1996 e al Festival di Cannes del 1994. I suoi lavori televisivi hanno ottenuto riconoscimenti sia in Nuova Zelanda che all'estero. The Summer the Queen Came ha meritato alla Caro una nomination come miglior scrittrice e regista al NZ Film and television Awards del 1994.
