Nato in Irlanda, Stuart Townsend debutta come attore con Trojan Eddie (1996), a cui seguiranno, tra gli altri, About Adam (2000) che lo fa notare alla critica, La regina dei dannati (2002), La lega degli uomini straordinari (2003), Gioco di donna (2004), The Best Man (2005), Aeon Flux (2005) e Chaos Theory (2007). Battle in Seattle è il suo primo film da regista.
