Beasts of the Southern Wild

Directed by

Hushpuppy is 6 years old and lives with her father, Wink, in the swamps of southern Louisiana, where flooding is frequent. Waiting for the landfall of a huge hurricane that could wipe out the entire community, Wink discovers that he is severely ill and hopes that his daughter will remain and become queen of the area one day. But Hushpuppy will take a different road. Filmed entirely in 16mm, the film was made with a small crew thanks to the help of the local population of Montegut, Louisiana. It won the Caméra d’or in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes International Film Festival.
