Nella colonia penale

Hidden away and barely accessible, three of Europe’s last penal colonies are located in Sardinia. The prisoners serve out their time between cell walls or outside tending fields and animals or doing maintenance work on the prison. Most are illegal migrants; unknown their origin, their crime, their sentence. Before the camera, prison routine and nature spin round in an endless wheel. A suspended space in this relic of the past; the three will soon close. For now they are an odd reflection of another society and its unresolved contradictions.
